A LIFE LIVED ON BREAD ALONE

images“Man versus Food.”

I am told there is a TV show with this name.

And here is why I think that show was suitably named.

It’s because life can subtly come down that – food.

It’s possible to wake and lie with one driving ambition, f-o-o-d!

If not checked, appetites easily become candidates of our worship and Dining tables, our high places. Our Chewing and savoring could easily become the goal, forgetting, “man shall not live on bread alone” (Matt 4:4)

Michael, my kid brother expresses it quite comically: he says you can know one’s reverence for food in conversations when delicacies like “muwogo” begin to be referred to as “kamuwogo”.And I bet you have heard more worshipful expressions towards food than the above, haven’t you?

But let’s get this right first, food was created was be “enjoyed with thanksgiving” (1 Timothy 4:4) but looks like we fallen humans have the capacity to make an Idol out of anything –including Irish potatoes.

And I say Irish potatoes because I know how my tone easily changes in conversations about this Kabale export.Typical example are the guys who saw Jesus multiply bread .

And because of bread (which then had no butter by the way),their eyes were blinded to his mission. Listen to Jesus’s reprimand to them.Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.” (John 6:26).

“Ate loaves and you were filled” – quite a statement. Talk of a life lived on bread alone.

Why do I think we are not different?
